Remembrances from Lyle W. Kirk

Charles was a 1948 class member at the SOM at Anacostia as was I.  He then did a stint as a Navy Band member before applying for OCS and a commission.  However, he received his commission as a Line Officer and retired after about 23 years as a LCDR, having earlier served as CO of one of our fleet tugs when yet still a Lt.  That ship was the USS Tawasa - ATF 92, doing mostly Salvage and Rescue work.

'Charlie' (or affectionately 'Chuck') never lost or deserted his love for music and Navy Musicians.  He became an active musician again in the San Diego area after his Navy retirement.  He attended the 1998 NMA reunion there and played Clarinet and Baritone Sax.  He was also an active and supporting member of a Clarinet 'Society' in San Diego, and played in and conducted a large all-clarinet band/orchestra.  Charlie contracted cancer in early 2006 and passed away within about 6 weeks time.
